What Is A Compounding Pharmacy and Why Do I Need One?

Your doctor has prescribed a medication for you that is not manufactured by a drug company.  How can you get this prescription filled?  The solution is a compounding pharmacy.

A compounding pharmacy is different from a regular pharmacy.   The pharmacists and technicians at a compounding pharmacy have the additional training and education necessary to create a custom medication just for you, according to your doctor’s specifications.  A compounding pharmacy has the specialized equipment and laboratories needed to create a variety of compounded medications, such as injections, capsules, liquids etc.  The specialized equipment and tools are expensive to attain and laboratories require additional space, which is why a regular pharmacy is not best suited for compounding medications.

Custom Care Pharmacy & Compounding Centre is a compounding pharmacy conveniently located in Oshawa.  Our pharmacists and staff have been trained in the art and science of compounding both sterile and non-sterile medications by nationally recognized associations, such as the Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) and the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP).

We have a specially built USP 797 laboratory to prepare sterile medications

We have a specially built USP 797 laboratory to prepare sterile medications

At Custom Care Pharmacy & Compounding Centre, we have a specialized laboratory built for the creation of sterile medications.  It contains state-of-the-art equipment such as the Laminar Air-Flow Workbench, which minimizes particulate contamination (e.g. by bacteria) to produce the cleanest work area possible for the compounding of germ-free medications.

We also have a non-sterile laboratory, containing equipment such as an ointment mill.  An ointment mill reduces the particle size of the medication and ensures even distribution for a smooth and homogenous compounded medication.

Our laboratories conform to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 795 and 797 standards and have ISO 5, ISO 7 and ISO 8 certification, thus ensuring maximized product safety and quality.

For every unique, custom compounded medication, from sterile injections for the bloodstream to lactose-free capsules for allergic patients, we have the specialized training and equipment required.

In addition to specialty compounding, Custom Care Pharmacy & Compounding Centre also fills regular prescriptions, prepares blister packaged medications, have pharmacist consultations and flu shots available.  We even offer free delivery for your convenience!
